Ottawa police will continue to monitor and sweep the downtown core of nuisance complaints this weekend, caused largely by a post-secondary student population eager to return to its weekend playground.
The enforcement began Thursday night.
In partnership with agents from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, City of Ottawa bylaw and OC Transpo, the ByWard Market, Lowertown, Vanier, Sandy Hill and Centretown districts were targeted.
“The enforcement is designed to address ongoing community concerns in the downtown core associated with disturbances, noise, public intoxication, drug use, aggressive driving and property damage,” said central district Insp. Mike Laviolette.”The goals of the project are to educate through enforcement and promote the safe and lawful enjoyment of downtown streets, sidewalks, parks, Transit way properties and businesses.”
Fifty-six provincial offence notices were handed out on Thursday night for everything from trespassing to drinking in public. Police also laid 15 criminal charges for theft, fraud, possessing a controlled substance and breaching conditions.
Police have also walked around densely-populated student areas, handing out information about the laws.
Students can expect to see officers out until the end of the party in the wee hours of Sunday morning.
