Unionized National Arts Centre workers, including maintenance, cleaning, security and parking services, are expected to vote Monday on a tentative contract agreement reached with the centre late Friday night.
Alroy Fonseca, of the Public Service Alliance of Canada’s National Capital region, confirmed Saturday that the union leadership was recommending acceptance of the offer.
No details will be released before the ratification vote.
The PSAC represents some 70 workers at the centre.
The two sides had been in bargaining since December, 2011, but talks broke down this fall over money issues.
The union took a strike vote earlier this month, with Sept. 24 the first legal strike date.
Although the centre had said the NAC would remain open in the event of a walkout by the staff, the union had said it would attempt to shut down the NAC in the event of a strike.
“Just watch us go,” Larry Rousseau, the PSAC’s vice-president for the National Capital Region said in an interview.
“We’re talking about the Public Service Alliance of Canada here. The labour movement will show up.”
The action wasn’t necessary and the workers were to gather at a celebratory barbecue Saturday afternoon.
