Two accidents on opposite sides of the city slowed commuters to a crawl on Tuesday morning.
An accident on Highway 417 eastbound near Ikea jammed up traffic during early rush hour and sent many Ottawa motorists scrambling for alternative routes.
According to Ontario Provincial Police, the three-car collision near the Pinecrest exit of the highway forced eastbound traffic to merge into a single lane, which caused traffic coming from Highway 416 and Kanata to backup.
The cars were cleared away by 7:45 a.m. and traffic flow through the area returned to its normal pace.
Another collision on Highway 174 westbound around 7:30 also affected early morning commuters, forcing lane closures and backing up traffic coming in from the east end. Lanes on that highway were reduced while emergency crews tried to pull a vehicle from the ditch.
