The Société de transport de l’Outaouais (STO) is investing $200,000 to improve the safety of its Rapibus transit line, in the wake of series of accidents.

The line, which runs east-west from Aylmer into Gatineau and south into Ottawa, has been plagued with dozens of accidents since opening in October 2013. The most recent, in September saw five taken to hospital after a bus ran into a cyclist along the transitway.

The commission announced Friday it would be investing additional fund to make the Rapibus system for riders as well as cyclists and drivers who use roadways that cross the transitway.

As a first step, the commission has painted wide red crosswalks at several intersections. It also said it would be examining the timing to traffic lights and the possibility of installing more traffic lights to help better control the flow of traffic.

The STO will also work to make directional signals at the intersections more clear for both automobiles and buses.

And the commission plans a public information campaign to stress safe practices for people around the Rapibus corridor.
