A man who fell asleep at the wheel and drove his car into the Gatineau River Saturday night is in shock, but uninjured, police say.

According to MRC des Collines police, a 29-year-old Gracefield, Que., man was driving north on Road 105 near O’Connor Road when he fell asleep and drove into the nearby waterway.

The driver then got out of his Chevrolet Cavalier, went to a nearby home and called police himself to report the incident at around 8 p.m.

Police say the man was “very lucky” to have landed his car in a shallow part of the river. The car was partially submerged when first responders got to the scene.

Road 105 was closed in the northbound lanes for a few minutes as crews got the car out of the river.

Police say paramedics brought the man to hospital as a precaution, but that he didn’t appear to have any injuries.

MRC des Collines police are reminding drivers to take a break if they feel tired.
