In one of the most sought-after political blessings in the municipal election campaign, retiring Osgoode councillor and rural political icon Doug Thompson has made his choice.
It what he says was a tough decision, Thompson revealed to the Citizen Tuesday that of the 11 candidates, local telecommunications executive George Darouze will get his vote.
Tough decision said Thompson, because he knows all the other candidates — some for 30 years or more — and worked with most on various community projects.
“There are a number of candidates who are close,” said Thompson, “but in the end I think George is the one who can do the job. I‘ve been here (at City Hall) for 14 years and know what it takes.”
Darouze, he says, has more or less job shadowed him for the past two years.
Although he has knocked on a few doors with Darouze since the candidate began campaigning in April, Thompson says he has deliberately kept a low profile.
He says he decided to publicly endorse Darouze because voters are constantly asking him whom he favours.
“I do owe it to the residents,” he said.
Darouze gets the Thompson nod but that hasn’t stopped the veteran incumbent from allowing other candidates to share his political aura.
“I have been very approachable,” Thompson said. “Some of them say ‘can I have a picture taken with you?’ and a couple of days later it’s on their website. I don’t have a problem with that.”
Thompson’s endorsement is “huge” Darouze told the Citizen.
“Mr. Thompson is my mentor,” he said. “I’ve worked very closely with him and he has taught me a lot. I’m honoured he wants to pass the torch to me.”
This Osgoode campaign is the most vigorous and competitive in political memory, added Thompson.
“It’s like a prize fight,” he said, “they’re going toe-to-toe.”
