The Ottawa Senators unveiled four new mascots Thursday afternoon, ending speculation about mysterious election signs that had popped up across the city in recent days.
The new mascots are giant foam-padded versions of Sir John A. Macdonald, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Sir Robert Borden and Sir William Lyon Mackenzie King. They were unveiled Thursday at a Senators flag-raising outside City Hall.
Team president Cyril Leeder said the prime ministers will, among other things, race each other on the ice at some home games. He said they’ll add to the in-game experience for fans.
The promotion started earlier this week when mysterious signs started popping up around the city, emblazoned with messages such as “Le retour de Willy,” “Johnny Mac is back” and “Lyon King returns.”
Many were placed next to municipal election campaign signs.

The idea is reminiscent of the Presidents Race, a promotion held at Washington Nationals games where five foam-headed former presidents race each other during the fourth inning.
The Senators start their season Thursday night in Nashville against the Predators.
