Gatineau Park has 90 plants and 53 animal species that are considered endangered by Quebec and/or Canada. They include: The Blanding’s turtle; woodland sunflower; wild leek; Eastern Red Cedar; least bittern; peregrine falcon; and Eastern Milksnake.
The Eastern Red Cedar tree is only found in warm dry climates, including the Eardley Escarpment. Gatineau Park is home to 80 percent of all Eastern red cedars in Quebec.
The Blanding’s turtle is a threatened species of turtle that lives in swamps in a few locations in Gatineau Park such as the Eardley Plateau. This species is especially vulnerable to road mortality and avoids human presence.
The woodland sunflower is listed as a vulnerable species in Quebec. This rare, beautiful flower lives in big clusters on the Eardley escarpment due to its warm dry climate. It is normally found in the American Southwest.
The Peregrine Falcon nests on bare rocks, and is the fastest flying bird in the world. There are four active falcon nests in the park on the Eardley Escarpment.
Gatineau tadpole snail – rare snail that is only found in lakes in Gatineau Park
The wild leek is listed in Quebec as vulnerable due to harvesting pressure.
The Eastern Milksnake is often mistaken for a rattlesnake. This small snake lives in various habitats, including rocky outcrops throughout the park.
