An Ottawa demolition firm has been fined $60,000 in connection with a workplace accident that cost an employee his arm.

McKeown Contracting, an Ottawa firm that specializes in demolition and excavation, pleaded guilty to failing to ensure that a soil screening conveyor belt was stopped during repair work.

A worker, who tried to make an adjustment to the belt while it was still in operation, had his arm pulled into the conveyor and severed in August 2013.

A Ministry of Labour investigation found that a lock-out procedure — measures to ensure workers do not have access to moving machine parts — was not performed as required by law.

The fine was imposed Thursday under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
