“Autumn is a second spring, when every leaf is a flower.”

—Albert Camus.

Thanksgiving Saturday and Sunday — especially Sunday — sparkled in the Gatineau Hills and the trees responded with a breathtaking profusion of fall colour.

And the people, drawn by the magnetic beauty of it all, came in the thousands with cameras and iPhones primed.

By early afternoon, there was a slow procession of motor vehicles threading its way along the Gatineau parkways.

“Parking Lot Full” signs began appearing shortly afterwards, leaving many who wanted to park and walk frustrated but with little choice but to drive on or park illegally and risk a ticket.

Whether wittingly or not, the latter option was chosen by enough motorists to keep the parking enforcers busy.

This was the penultimate weekend of what the National Capital Commission has dubbed its four-weekend “Fall Rhapsody,” but if the weather forecasters are correct, the final weekend of official activities planned for the Chelsea visitor centre could be comparatively damp.

Still, the leaves can live on further into October without the NCC’s official designation.

Despite the commission’s best efforts to suggest alternate locations to enjoy the fall leaves, the annual invasion of Chelsea and immediate environs continued unabated.

The Mackenzie King Estate, approachable from its own nearby parking lot or from the Mulvihill Lake lot a short hike away, drew its usual crowds (its tea room, which closes Oct. 19, is ever popular) but the other pathways leading to the colour-filled vistas were, as ever, well-trodden on Sunday.

As families photographed themselves against the various backdrops and solo visitors captured the moment with selfies, the words of Lucy Maude Montgomery, one of hundreds of writers inspired by autumn, never seemed more appropriate:

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers,” she wrote in Anne of Green Gables.
