The Ottawa Police Service offers a host of services to officers who are facing mental health issues.

“We know they’re successful because people are accessing them,”Chief Charles Bordeleau says.

The service offers a chaplaincy and program that connects officers to spiritual leaders of different faiths.

The crisis intervention and stress management team, co-ordinated by Sgt. Dodd Tapp, is a team of seven volunteer officers who are trained and deployed when there is a crisis.

“They are out there and they’re actively connecting with sections and individuals and doing that one-on-one dialogue and counselling,” Bordeleau says.

External service provider, Homewood, offers an employee and family assistance program that is anonymous.

The service also has staff who work in the employee safety and lifestyles group, who are trained to be “the point of contact for individuals who are away on any type of sick leave.” They work with providers to plan officers’ return to work and make sure they are getting their assistance.

Both unions — the Ottawa Police Association and the Senior Officers Association — provide support through their networks.

The force continues to have officers run Robin’s Blue Circle and has a functional branch of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Bordeleau says the force’s victim crisis unit, which is staffed by social workers, “is critical, not only in providing services to victims outside our organization, but for support for our own members in dealing with crises.”

The service also has a respectful-workplace program.

A holistic multidiscipinary approach called “Real You” will be putting another 100 members through a specialized program involving naturopathic physicians, physiotherapists and psychologists. About 350 members have already gone through the program.
