Ottawa – As part of Ottawa Health Day, Dr. Isra Levy, Medical Officer of Health and Mr. Alex Munter, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) announced this year’s flu vaccine campaign at the Ottawa Public Health (OPH) Immunization Centre at 100 Constellation Drive.

With flu season approaching, Dr. Levy and Mr. Munter emphasized the importance for children 10 years and under to get the flu vaccine.

“Children have the highest rates of the flu and children under age five have higher rates of serious illness from the flu,” said Dr. Levy. “For parents and kids, the best shot at beating the flu is by getting the flu vaccine and getting it early.”

Ottawa residents have more options than ever to protect themselves and their families from the flu. Residents can get their flu shot from doctors’ office and walk-in clinics. Anyone five years or older can visit one of more than 170 pharmacies, which offer longer hours and accessible locations throughout Ottawa.

In addition to publicly funded vaccines, there are now more options such as FluMist® becoming available through pharmacies later this month. Last year, there were 3,720 hospitalizations in Ontario from the flu and complications from the illness, including more than 100 in Ottawa.

“Every year, there are many children who are admitted to CHEO suffering from the flu or from related complications such as pneumonia,” said Mr. Munter. “We know children between the ages of 6 and 10 are the ‘big spreaders’ of the illness, so getting the flu shot protects you, your family and others.”

This year, OPH is offering 19 community clinics throughout the city starting October 25 through to November 24, and residents can also visit public clinics taking place at four Ottawa hospitals. As pharmacists administer the flu vaccine to residents over the age of five, OPH will also be holding flu vaccine clinics by appointment only for children under five and for their parents and siblings at the OPH Immunization Centre, located on the main floor at 100 Constellation Drive, between October 20 and January 15.

Along with getting the flu vaccine, it's important to remember to:

  • Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your arm, not your hand
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use hand sanitizer
  • Stay at home if you are sick
