Adam Prevost has been sentenced to four years in prison for killing Alain Seguin in a deadly Oct. 2, 2013, crash at Bank and Laurier.
Prevost, 20, refused a breathalyzer 10 times after he sailed through the red light going double the posted speed.
Seconds before the early-morning crash, Prevost’s friend in the passenger seat had demanded he stop.?
But Prevost kept going and slammed into Seguin’s car, crushing the driver’s side and killing the hardworking grandfather.
Seguin, 54, had just dropped his fiancée off at work minutes before 4 a.m. He was headed for another day at the brick plant, working a job hard enough for men half his age.
Shortly after Justice Hugh Fraser sentenced Prevost to prison, Seguin’s fiancée sat outside the court, dabbing at steady tears as friends and family comforted her.
“I’m speechless,” she told the Citizen.
Prevost pleaded guilty in September to criminal negligence causing death and refusing to provide a breath sample. He also apologized.
In a victim-impact statement read in court, one of Seguin’s relatives noted that it took Prevost almost a year to come clean and apologize.
Seguin had been months away from his summer wedding.
His fiancée addressed court in September and told Prevost: “You have committed me to a life sentence without him.”
