Ottawa police Sgt. Steven Desjourdy will be docked 20 days pay, but will not be demoted in connection with a cellblock incident involving a drunk woman in 2008, a police hearing has ruled.

Desjourdy had been found guilty of discreditable conduct for failing to give woman in the cellblock adequate clothing after a strip search.

The Ottawa Police Services prosecutor had sought a six-month demotion to constable first class for Desjourdy.

The sergeant’s defence had asked for Defence has asked for a reprimand or docking of five days’ pay as a sentence.

Desjourdy was previously acquitted of sexual assault for the same 2008 incident.

The hearing officer, retired OPP Supt. Robert Fitches, said that in 20 years of presiding over hearings he has never seen such glowing recommendations for an officer.

He said he was left to conclude that what happened in Sept. 2008 was atypical of the officer.
