A Kanata woman will no longer have to ask for help to get her mail after Canada Post said Tuesday they have switched her to a box that’s easier to reach.

Ruth Hurst told the Citizen on Monday she had asked Canada Post for a lower slot at the new community mailbox but she was told that wasn’t possible.

Hurst, who uses a wheelchair, couldn’t reach her mailbox. So on Monday, the first day without door-to-door delivery in her community, she was left to peer out her front window until she saw a neighbour approach whom she could ask for help.

“We also apologized for not being clear in our initial discussion which left her with a box that was too high,” Canada Post said in a statement. “We understand the change to community mailboxes will be difficult for some, and therefore have a robust accommodation program in place.”

The Canada Post changes are part of cost-reduction efforts announced nearly a year ago and aimed at saving hundreds of millions of dollars for the struggling postal service.

The change has been controversial, prompting the Canadian Union of Postal Workers to vow they will file a Federal Court challenge, and calls the situation a human rights violation.
