WASHINGTON -- Audi is recalling nearly 102,000 A4 sedans in the United States to fix a software glitch that may prevent front airbags from deploying in a crash.
The 101,900 A4s from model years 2013-2015 being recalled stateside are part of a global recall of about 850,000 A4s built from Nov. 2011 to earlier this month. While some 7.8 million U.S. vehicles have been recalled since 2013 for defective Takata airbags that may explode shrapnel at vehicle occupants, Audi’s issue is different and Takata is not a supplier to the automaker, according to an Audi spokesman.
The spokesman said that quality assurance tests of A4s rolling off Audi assembly lines found a glitch in the software code that, in rare cases, may prevent airbags from deploying properly in a crash. Audi will “immediately” notify customers to take their vehicles to dealers who can update the software in about 20 minutes.
Audi says it has no reports of accidents or injuries related to the glitch in the United States.
About half of the vehicles affected globally are in Volkswagen brand's two biggest markets of China and Germany.
Audi is recalling about 250,000 A4 models in China, its biggest market, and 150,000 in Germany.
The airbag problem is caused by a software fault, affecting A4 sedans, station wagons and allroad models.
The world's No. 2 premium carmaker last week adjusted production of A4 models at its German plants in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm, adding new software.
News of the recall was published earlier today by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport magazine.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
As you may or may not have heard as yet, Audi will be sending letters to clients who own the above vehicles to advise them of a recall on the airbag system which requires a reprogramming at the dealership to correct. No part replacements are needed according to the information we received today. The letter accompanying is not very clear what will happen in the event of a collision with their airbags so I contacted Audi to get clear information for the inevitable questions you will get from your customers. Although the recall will pertain to all the above vehicles, the only ones that are truly affected are cars that have been in previous collisions in which the airbag control unit has received a signal to deploy. The problem can occur if the client should be in another collision later in which the control unit receives a signal to deploy again. The unit may not respond on the second occasion meaning the front airbags may not deploy as they should. The update we will do is to the control unit to correct this computer issue.

DETROIT — The U.S. government is now urging owners of nearly 8 million cars and trucks to have the air bags repaired because of potential danger to drivers and passengers. But the effort is being complicated by confusing information and a malfunctioning website.
The government's auto safety agency says that inflator mechanisms in the air bags can rupture, causing metal fragments to fly out when the bags are deployed. The inflators are made by Japanese parts supplier Takata Corp.
Owners can check by manufacturer. Here is the list of vehicles released Wednesday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:
Note: The list below corrects the list that accompanied NHTSA's Oct. 20 advisory, which incorrectly included certain vehicles. The numbers cited for potentially affected vehicles below are subject to change and adjustment because there may be cases of vehicles being counted more than once. Owners should check their VIN periodically as manufacturers continue to add VINs to the database. Once owner recall notices are available, owners can retrieve a copy from SaferCar.gov, or will receive one by U.S. mail and are advised to carefully follow the enclosed instructions.
