To the skirl of a lone piper and borne by kilted soldiers from his regiment, slain Cpl. Nathan Cirillo began his journey home Thursday afternoon.
About 100 people stood outside the funeral home to watch the ceremony, many of them carrying Canadian flags.
Cirillo died Wednesday when he was shot while standing sentry at the National War Memorial.
The soldier’s mother, Kathy Cirillo, accompanied his body as it left the McEvoy-Shields funeral home to a black hearse escorted by members of his regiment, Hamilton’s Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders.
A Hamilton city police cruise led the procession, which was flanked by Ottawa police motorcycles.
Steve Good was one of the people who came to show his respects. He’s seen a similar ceremony from the other side. His brother, Trooper Brian Good, was killed in Afghanistan in January 2009.
Good said hundreds of flag-waving people lined the roadways and overpasses for Brian’s journey along the Highway of Heroes.
“It was such a sad time but it was amazing to see all the people who came out to support us,” Steven Good said.
Cirillo’s procession travelled west on Hunt Club Road to Highway 416, then headed south to Highway 401.
It was expected to take six to seven hours, reaching Hamilton Friday evening.
