Orléans voters have elected Bob Monette to a third term on municipal council.

Monette defeated two challengers in Monday’s election: R. Gordon Jensen and Jennifer Robitaille.

It wasn’t supposed to be this way. He had once vowed not to seek a full third term.

Monette ran in a byelection to replace Herb Kreling in early 2006 and was re-elected in a general election later that year and again in 2010. That was supposed to be his last outing.

But earlier this year, he announced he wanted to stay on to ensure work gets done on the $500-million LRT extension to Place d’Orléans. City, province and federal government cost-sharing has yet to be settled for the LRT.

As well, Monette has said another priority is the Ottawa River Action Plan to build underground storage tanks downtown to prevent raw sewage spilling untreated into the river and flowing past Petrie Island. The plan will benefit Petrie Island, regarded by many as Ottawa’s finest stretch of beach.
