Internet-fuelled speculation that Ottawa-born starlet Alanis Morissette faked an illness to skip out on performing at a downtown charity fundraiser on Monday night appears to be false.

However, what does seem to be true is that Morissette is far from being a social media maven.

Morissette was scheduled to perform at a charity fundraiser hosted by Fertile Future, an organization that works with young cancer patients to “promote awareness and understanding of fertility preservation and survivor health care issues.”

Morissette cancelled two days prior to the event due to an illness, said Heidi Bonnell, the fundraiser’s organizer.

Then last night, around the time the event was starting, Morissette posted to her Twitter and Instagram accounts a photo collage that included an image of her smiling at a beach along with a photo of her looking jovial while preparing food.

The tweet said she was enjoying a “great day of sous-chef-ing” with the Adrienne Shelly Foundation, an organization that supports female filmmakers.

Her tweet, and the accompanying images, can be seen below.

Naturally, the Twitterati cried bloody murder. People questioned why she was enjoying herself on a beach if she was purportedly sick.

Even Ministry of Industry James Moore opined on the situation. (Hope Live was the name of the event.)

The situation snowballed, and by Tuesday the CBC was reporting a story about people accusing Morissette of “faking sick.”

Except, that photo was only posted yesterday, not taken yesterday. Morissette was, indeed, sick.

According to the Adrienne Shelly Foundation Facebook page, the photo was taken last week in Malibu.

Reached for comment, Morissette’s publicist confirmed the photo wasn’t taken yesterday, but earlier this month at a private residence in California. (Her publicist did not comment on the exact nature of Morissette’s illness.)

All of which suggests Morissette doesn’t really understand how posting things on social media works, or the concept of a #latergram.

As for Bonnell, she said her organization managed to land rocker Burton Cummings last minute.

“It was disappointing” having Morissette cancel, said Bonnell. “On the upside, Burton Cummings stepped up in a huge way. On last minute notice he jumped on a plane and put on one hell of a show.”
