Ottawa – Mayor Jim Watson, along with Jamaican High Commissioner-designate to Canada, Mrs. Janice Miller, and members of Ottawa’s Jamaican community today celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Jamaican (Ottawa) Community Association by planting a Canadian maple tree in Strathcona Park, just across from the official residence of the Jamaican High Commissioner.
The Jamaican (Ottawa) Community Association grew out of the West Indian Association of Ottawa, which was formed in 1964. Helping with the social integration of its members was one of the primary objectives of the West Indian Association of Ottawa.
“Today, people of Jamaican heritage – professionals, caregivers, musicians, artists and students – are an important part of Ottawa, and I am delighted to be recognizing their rich heritage in our city,” said Mayor Watson. “Their community association has reached a significant milestone, one that I am excited to be celebrating with them today.”
In addition to promoting social integration into our community, the Jamaican (Ottawa) Community Association provides social and cultural activities for its members, as well as the broader community.
“The Canadian maple symbolizes how the Jamaican community planted its roots here more than 50 years ago, and went on to grow and contribute to this vibrant city we now call home,” said Joanne Robinson, President of the Jamaican (Ottawa) Community Association.
