Susan Richardson
On Oct. 23, my father in law, Willie Richardson, turned 100.
On Oct. 23, the newest member of his family, a great granddaughter, Macy Richardson, turned one.
Two family birth dates, exactly 99 years apart.
Willie, who was born in Reading, England, moved to Ottawa at age seven.
Always the risk-taker, he spent his boyhood running on the log booms along the Ottawa River, leaping into the river from the black bridge that spans the river between Ottawa and Gatineau, jumping from the rafters into the pool at the Plante Bath, and fire eating along with the performers at the circus.
Dancing was always a significant part of his life, and he loves to tell the story of when, given a week off work, he danced in a week-long marathon in Gatineau. That’s 24 hours a day for seven days.
Willie served in the Canadian Navy from 1938 until the end of the war, at which time he joined the reserves. He treasures all the medals he wears proudly each year on his yearly visits to the Legion.
Today, he still lives in his own home, opens his swimming pool every spring, and enjoys good food and the occasional beer. He plays cards on Thursdays and visits with his close friend every weekend.
When asked what sage advice he could impart to his youngest grandchild he answered:
“Well, first and foremost, she should get a good education, that’s really important. Then I guess she shouldn’t ever worry about her age when she gets older. I never worried about mine. I lived an ordinary life, always happy, nothing bothered me. I’d like her to have respect for people and always be kind to everyone. Stay healthy, spend as much time outside as she possibly can.
And … dance. Always dance.
