The Ottawa Hospital is getting 60 hectares of federal property to rebuild its Civic campus on Carling Avenue.

The property, about six per cent of the Central Experimental Farm, is to be transferred from Agriculture Canada to the National Capital Commission, “for the construction of a world-class hospital and teaching facility,” a news release said. The arrangement would be similar to that for the Queensway-Carleton Hospital, a provincial hospital built on land leased from the federal government.

The hospital has been hoping to rebuild its Civic campus, which has often been renovated and added to. Land across Carling from the current complex was its first choice, with other options including land in the Greenbelt closer to Nepean.

There’s no immediate timetable for the project, and no guaranteed provincial funding. “Moving forward, this land transfer permits The Ottawa Hospital to plan the new Civic Campus in accordance with the requirements of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and on its schedule,” the announcement said.

More to come.
