What a difference a week makes, especially in the world of municipal politics.
Kanata North challenger Matt Muirhead ran an aggressive campaign against Marianne Wilkinson, even suggesting at one point that the long-serving incumbent borrowed from his platform after she announced she would “seek weekly garbage pickup during summer months.”
He also accused Wilkinson of “dirty tricks” on election day.
Want a City Councillor who keeps their word? Who fights for "us" vs "I", stand with me then #Kanata North. #ottcity

Dirty tricks by the incumbent: caught campaigning in a polling station which is a breach of election law. Poll… http://t.co/mjPLe6IpHM

After the results were in, Muirhead tweeted this:
Enjoy the victory @marianne4kanata but you will be going to court. Enjoy. #kanatanorth #kanata #ottcity
— Matt Muirhead (@MJMuirhead) October 28, 2014
He also retweeted Andrew Seymour, my Citizen colleague who covered the race.
@MJMuirhead assures me he is very serious about filing defamation suit. Stay tuned, this seems to be getting nasty. #ottvote

I spoke to Muirhead the day after the election and he confirmed what he had told Andrew the previous night. He said then that he hadn’t hired a lawyer yet but was actively going to seek legal counsel.
So, imagine my surprise when I saw these two tweets:
@andrew_seymour @marianne4kanata A good meeting between us. Campaigns can be tough. Things said that can be misconstrued. 1/2
— Matt Muirhead (@MJMuirhead) November 3, 2014
@marianne4kanata and I are putting things behind us and moving forward as friends. #Kanata expects no less. Onwards. #ottcity 2/2
— Matt Muirhead (@MJMuirhead) November 3, 2014
Wilkinson also got in on the action, tweeting this:
Matt Muirhead & I have reconnected to work together in serving our community as we have in the past. We have been friends for many years.
— Marianne Wilkinson (@marianne4kanata) November 4, 2014
This is the complete Wilkinson/Muirhead statement:
Last week we met together and agreed that since the municipal election campaign is now over that we would both move our attention to jointly serving the needs and interests of our community as we have done in the past. We have been friends for many years and we agreed that maintaining that friendship and our respect for each other is what matters now.
