A convoluted tale paused last night after police arrested two men following an alleged attempt to throw an international student off the Cummings Bridge.

The story started on Saturday night near the intersection of Rideau Street and William Street.

At around 7 p.m. three men allegedly assaulted a 31-year-old man and made alleged threats to kill him. Their blows delivered facial and shoulder injuries, police say. A fourth suspect was allegedly involved in the assault, but police have not been able to identify that person.

Three nights later, police say investigators were patrolling the eastern portion of the downtown core in a bid to find the assailants.

During their search, police allege they stumbled upon a 32-year-old international student being attacked by two men on the Cummings Bridge.

Upon arrival, the student managed to break free and flee the scene.

While the student fled, police arrested the two men. At this point, they figured out they’d happened upon two suspects from Saturday night’s assault.

Meanwhile, after realizing police had brought down his assailants, the student returned to the scene.

He told police he had been walking home when a man grabbed him, seemingly for no reason, and tried to toss him over the bridge.

On the bridge, a 16-year-old man (who is not named because of his age) and Timothy Smith, 31, were arrested and charged. Smith faces assault charges while the 16-year-old faces a slew of weapon charges.

Police say they are in the process of obtaining an arrest warrant for James Picody, 31. He faces an assault charge and a charge for uttering threats.

However, his whereabouts is not known.

The police’s investigation into the Rideau Street assault continues.
