The pilot of a small plane and a passenger have been found dead following a crash in a remote area of Algonquin Park.
The male victims were said to be in their mid-20s, although identities have yet to be released.
A military spokesman said the Cessna 150 had left the Buttonville Airport northeast of Toronto Tuesday night and the pilot had intended to return there. However, the pilot declared an “airborne emergency” early in the flight.
The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre sent a CH-146 Griffin Helicopter and a CC-130 Hercules aircraft to search the area and the Hercules was able to locate a distress beacon early Wednesday.
The Ontario Provincial Police were notified to assist in the search and helicopter hoisted search and rescue technicians to the site, approximately 20 kilometres south of Whitney in a densely treed area.
