Jeffrey Arenburg, the man who was found not criminally responsible in the shooting death of sportscaster Brian Smith, is back in Ottawa.
Police said they found his car abounded on Richardson Side Road near Carp over the weekend and towed it away.
Police said they have been in contact with Arenburg and that he is aware of where his car is.
Arenburg was found not criminally responsible for killing Smith in 1995. He spent the next decade under psychiatric supervision, until late 2006, when the Ontario Review Board (ORB), an arm’s-length government agency with jurisdiction over the province’s criminally insane, granted him an absolute discharge.
In November 2007, almost exactly one year later, Arenburg punched a U.S. border guard in the mouth at the Peace Bridge crossing in Buffalo. He was convicted of assault and spent nearly two years in prison before he was deported back to Canada in 2009.
