Ottawa Whole Foods store manager Lisa Slater readily admits that meats are likely to cost more at her store.

“All the beef, pork, chicken and turkey in the meat department comes from farms that have achieved certification in the Global Animal Partnership’s 5-Step Animal Rating Program,” Slater said.

That non-profit program, based near Washington, stipulates certain requirements for each step; for example, Step 1 prohibits raising animals in cages or crates while Step 5+ requires that the entire life of the animal — from birth to slaughter — be spent on animal-centred farm.

“If you look at these standards, there’s no way we can offer the same prices as for conventionally raised meat,” says Slater, who says that Whole Foods’ beef will come from U.S. farms for now.

She says, however, that prices for most other products “are competitive.”

“You get what you pay for. All of us have to be aware that we have an impact on the environment and we will pay one way or another.”
