The worldweary 11-year-old girl said she thinks she knows the reason it took her so long just to get one candy cane at Saturday’s Help Santa Toy Parade.

“Our cuteness days are over,” said Bronwyn Serroul, who went to the Santa Claus parade with her nine-year-old sister Rilla Serroul and their parents.

Despite the sugar delays at Saturday’s parade, Rilla says she enjoyed the parade and seeing animals dressed up in Christmas attire. Her favourite was a “giant” Great Dane dressed as Santa Claus.

“My favourite part was when all the giant floods of dogs came by,” Rilla said. “It was adorable.”

Bronwyn excitedly recounted seeing a puppy “wrapped up in a blanket like a burrito napping in his mommy’s lap.”

For other children at the Santa Claus parade, their goal was to get there early to get a front row seat to increase their chance of being able to talk to the big man himself.

Photos: Help Santa Toy Parade

The young and young at heart came out to see — and play — Santa on Saturday morning for the Help Santa Toy Parade. Ottawa firefighters have been holding the annual event for 45 years, collecting new toys and money along the parade route, with donations distributed to less fortunate children in the city.

“I want to say I love him,” five-year-old Eric True yelled. “Because he gives us presents.”

Eric’s seven-year-old sister, Evann True, seemed a bit more shy. She wasn’t sure what she would say to Santa Claus.

Paige Chamberlain, 10, and her five-year-old sister Rachel, lined up on Laurier Avenue to watch the parade. The sisters clowned around with giant lip signs that were handed out to children.

Like many of the kids on the route, Paige loved seeing the dogs dressed up for Christmas. Now, she wants a dog for Christmas.

“I thought that was really cute,” she said.

Rachel, who wants an iPad and an Elsa doll from the movie Frozen, said she was most looking forward to seeing Santa Claus.

Rachel had a simple message for Santa if she got to meet him: “Hi,” she would say.

The Santa Claus parade wasn’t only for the kids. Thousands of people lined downtown streets to watch the parade as they sipped on coffee or hot chocolate.

The parade began on Wellington Street, turned south on Bank Street and made its way to Laurier Avenue West and then along to Elgin Street. There was no official estimate of the crowd size, but the sidewalks were packed along the whole route.

Cher Wood, who works with Friendly Giants Dog Rescue and walked in the parade with her dogs Dolly and Frankie, said participants were asked to keep up a steady pace and not mingle too much with the crowd.

The Ottawa Professional Fire Fighters’ Association has been organizing the parade every year since 1969 to collect toys for less fortunate children.

Donations can still be dropped off at any Ottawa fire station until mid-December.
