After spending much of Saturday off the Internet, the tweeter purporting to be behind the hacking of the City of Ottawa website returned to social media late in the afternoon with a barrage of messages that included what was alleged to be the home address and phone number of Ottawa police Chief Charles Bordeleau.

Bordeleau said Saturday he wouldn’t comment on the latest posts that show two different addresses for the chief.

“We’re investigating, we’re aware of the posts that he’s putting up and we’re continuing to investigate the matter,” Bordeleau said. “It’s inappropriate for me to comment any more on that.”

Meanwhile, the City of Ottawa restored its Ottawa.ca website almost 24 hours after an apparent hacker attack Friday night.

The city says it is confident that no corporate or resident information was compromised by the breach, but say users may still experience delays in refresh times for some Internet service providers.

Residents can continue to access city services by contacting 311.

The city shut down the site early Saturday after the incident Friday night, when Ottawa.ca displayed a black-and-white page with a message saying the website had been hacked. The message named an Ottawa police officer and prominently featured a gif of a dancing banana.

“We can destroy everything, this is a flex of our power. Please, test us,” the message read.

By about 7: 30 p.m. Friday, people trying to reach ottawa.ca were greeted with a plain page with a message: This account has been suspended.

Late Saturday morning, the Twitter account that had been claiming responsibility for the service interruptions posted a tweet saying that the operators were going “silent” until Monday.

However, the Twitter account started posting updates again on Saturday afternoon. The updates included addresses and tweets to both Toronto and Ottawa police.

“For fun, I’m starting to send aggressive emails from police staff members emails,” a tweet early Saturday evening read.

The attacks began Friday in apparent connection to what the tweeter claims was a bungled police investigation that resulted in the charging of an Ottawa teen in a case of “swatting,” sending false emergency messages to police that result in a strong police response such as a SWAT team presence.

On Saturday morning, the tweeter messaged what was listed as the home address and phone number under the name of “J Demore”, the investigating police officer involved, and goaded that the tweeter “would hate to see someone send dog—- to that house.”

The named police officer, Joel Demore, is a detective who investigated a “swatting” case in May in which a 16-year-old Ottawa youth was accused of making fake calls to emergency services across North America.

The youth was charged with 60 offences, including uttering death threats, conveying false information with intent to alarm, public mischief and mischief to property. “Swatting” is the term used by police to describe faking emergency calls to create a hoax or get revenge.

The officer’s email address was also included in the message on the city’s website.

The message ends with the hashtag #opSoaringEagle. A search for that hashtag yields a longer message on a separate website saying that “Operation Soaring Eagle” was launched two weeks ago, and targets the Ottawa police.

“We left a digital footprint inside your internal systems, find it. We are not going to be stopping, it is time for change,” that message reads.

“We will be taking over all Ottawa police networks, shutdown communications on the Internet, hijack domains, servers, and soo much more. It all starts today.”

The hackers end their note by writing, “We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not Forgive. We do not Forget. You should have expected us.”

Emails to city accounts bounced back Friday evening. City spokeswoman Marielle Picher said, “The city is aware of the issue and we’re investigating.”
