A 1,000-pound provolone that would likely kill you if it fell on you the wrong way has arrived in Ottawa.
“You never see something like this,” said Joe Nicastro, co-owner of Nicastro’s Italian Food Emporium on Merivale Road.
The Great Cheese Arrival is something of an annual Italian tradition at the family-run gourmet grocery store. Every year, the Nicastro brothers ship over the large cheese by a boat that travels from northern Italy, through to Toronto and into Ottawa.
Nicastro said it took nine people on Monday morning to offload the provolone, worth around $18,000, from a truck and into his store.
“We know this provolone when I was young. We sell them in my store in Italy,” said Nicastro, a native of Cleto, a small town in the country’s southern region. “We keep it as a tradition. This provolone, it’s the best selling in the world.”
A typical chunk of the sharp table cheese can weigh anywhere from 20 to 50 kilograms. This hulking block stretches for nearly 12 feet and clocks in at 500 kilograms, or a bit more than 1,000 pounds. It’s been aged 16 months so far, and can last up to three to four years if stored properly.

The store will chop it up and market it in time for the Christmas holidays at a cost of roughly $18 per pound. Nicastro said since he first introduced the idea in the 1980s, the cheese has almost always sold out. Then it’s just regular, non-monstrously sized provolone for the rest of the year.
“It’s a good milk cheese, very sharp,” said Nicastro.
It’s one of the best cheeses after parmesan. With this cheese, you need a bottle of wine.
How about the smell — does provolone this large stink up the entire store?
“Oh yes, a strong but good smell,” said Nicastro. “You can smell it throughout the store. We put it in the entrance, and people with the phone, they take a picture.”
