All of southern Ontario was under weather warnings and Environment Canada issued a special weather statement covering Eastern Ontario has Monday’s balmy, breezing day gave way to strong southwesterly winds, plunging temperatures and power outages with the arrival of a cold front from the west.
Ottawans enjoyed temperatures in the hight teens Monday afternoon, with brief rain showers around the region. But as the dinner hour approached, the wind gusts picked up and Hydro Ottawa began reporting power outages as trees and branches took down lines and, in at least one case, sparked a utility pole fire. Several tree fires were also reported.
Wind warnings were in effect for Southwestern Ontario and areas north of the Lower Great Lakes from Windsor to Kingston. Snow squalls were expected for areas east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
Hydro One was reporting outages across the province from Windsor to Cornwall and north to the Parry Sound area, and major urban areas, including Toronto reported widespread power failures.
Environment Canada said there was a chance of a thunderstorm over Eastern Ontario with as much as 15 to 25 millimetres of rain in advance of a cold front the was expected to produce wind gusts as high as 90 kilometres an hour.
Elsewhere in the province, wind gusts reached 100 km/h in some locations and provincial police were warning of numerous instances of trees knocked down onto roadways. A GO Transit train out of Toronto was held up by live wires on the tracks.
Temperatures in Eastern Ontario were expected to fall to the low single digits by Tuesday morning as winds eased.
By mid evening, Hydro Ottawa reported at least 15 power outages in the Kanata, West Carleton, Richmond, Munster, Bank Street south of Hunt Club and Page Road areas affecting thousands of subscribers but said it expected to have power restored within a few hours.
