The Ottawa Police Service says there has been a big increase recently in the number of scam artists phoning Ottawa-area residents and claiming to either be with a local utility or the Canada Revenue Agency.
The scammers then claim the resident owes money for their utilities or back taxes and demands the money be paid or else utilities will be cut off or the police will be notified.
The resident is told by the fraudster to go buy pre-paid Visa “Power Cards,” or similar pre-paid credit cards which are almost as good as cash. The fraudster will then call back and collect the information on the cards and siphon the money from them.
“The public should be suspicious of any phone calls demanding immediate payment via this method of payment,” said Sgt. Mitch Proteau in the Ottawa police’s fraud squad.
“The Ottawa police recommends that any person contacted about an unpaid bill should contact the utility (or CRA) using the publicly available telephone number to verify their account status and the legitimacy of the call they received.”
Anyone who has been hit by this type of scam is asked to call police at 613-236-1222 ext. 5162 or Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.
