Some 750 unionized blue-collar workers in Gatineau are staging a one-day walkout Wednesday as part of a Quebec-wide “Grand Dérangement” protest against pension plan changes.
Gatineau spookesman Jean Boileau said Wednesday morning the union members have staged peaceful protests at city municipal yards and planned to demonstrate at the offices of two local MNAs before moving to the Guertin arena later in the morning.
“The arenas are closed, but most other municipal services are uninterrupted,” Boileau said.
In Montreal, about two dozen demonstrators blocked the entrance to the Port of Montreal Wednesday morning with two small school buses, preventing trucks from entering.
In all, some 5,300 municipal employees in 18 cities across the province, including 1,950 of them in Montreal, were off the job Wednesday to protest against the Quebec government’s proposed pension reform law, Bill 3.
