Twenty-five years after a gunman killed 14 female college students in Montreal, a coalition of Ottawa women’s groups will use an annual vigil to stress that the attitudes that spurred the deadly attack persist.
Speakers at the vigil on Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Women’s Monument at Minto Park on Elgin Street will discuss violence against women today, even as they reflect on the tragic events of what would become known as the Montreal Massacre, the Women’s Event Network says.
“We forget that this act represents women’s inequality and wider societal sexism,” network members Valerie Collicott and Kim Dubé said in a release.
“We’d all like to think this was an extreme occurrence of violence by a madman. We would like to think twenty five years later we’ve come a long way. But we haven’t.”
Speakers will also examine the profound effects of gender-based violence on children, families and the community, “and we’ll look at how we move forward from here,” the network says.
The vigil at Minto Park has taken place every Dec. 6 since 1992, three years after the Montreal attack. It starts at 6 p.m. and is open to all.
