Ottawa police have identified Tausif Chowdhury, 23, an international student at Carleton University as the city’s sixth homicide victim.
An autopsy conducted Friday confirmed city homicide detective’s suspicions — a man whose bloodied body was discovered off of a southeast Ottawa footpath Thursday morning was beaten to death.
Chowdhury was found lifeless by two cyclists around 7 a.m. Thursday on the Sawmill Creek Pathway, which surrounds the reservoir of the same name and lies between the South Keys transit station and the long-awaited opened Airport Parkway pedestrian bridge, which opened Saturday. Major crime detectives were quickly called in to head the investigation after there were immediate and obvious signs of trauma to Chowdhury’s body.
Chowdhury, lying on his back in his bloodied clothes, was partially in the leafless brush, but his legs were splayed on the edge of a curve in the path. His backpack was also found nearby, as was a possible weapon. It’s not yet clear whether the weapon was used in the attack that left Chowdhury dead.
Police believe he was killed sometime Wednesday evening or early Thursday morning.
Investigators have also seized video surveillance footage from the nearby OC Transpo transit station and South Keys Shopping Centre hoping it could reveal Chowdhury’s final movements before he was killed. An evidence search of the area continued Friday afternoon.
Chowdhury appeared on a 2012 list of donors to Carleton University. His LinkedIn profile lists him as an engineering student at the university. It’s believed he is an international student, originally from Bangladesh. A university spokesperson said the university cannot confirm whether anyone is a student while he or she is still enrolled in classes.
According to his Facebook profile, Chowdhury admired beautiful and fast cars.
Police ask any witnesses who were in the area Wednesday night or Thursday morning and have any information to call the major crime unit at 613-236-1222 ext. 5493 or anonymously call Crime Stoppers at 613-233-8477.
