On New Year’s Day, the doors of the Kanata YMCA won’t just be locked for the holiday, they’ll be locked for good.

Citing a “sharp decline in membership” due to an “increasingly difficult landscape” and “an intense increase in competition,” the Kanata Y announced on Monday night it would be closing down on Dec. 31.

“This decision was not easy, and only after careful consideration did we come to the conclusion that this is the best course of action for our association,” said a letter co-signed by Deirdre Speers, president of the YMCA-YWCA in the capital region, and Kelly Shaw-Swettenham, a vice president with the organization.

“Since 2012, we have been making efforts to remain in this market while continuing to be transparent with members that this was not our Y’s long term strategy,” the letter stated.

The letter also said the limitations of the Kanata Y’s location played a factor in the organization’s decision making progress.

The Kanata Y is a tenant at the Canadian Tire Centre on Palladium Drive.

Town hall meetings will be held at the Kanata Y on Dec. 5 at 10:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m., and on Dec. 10 at 6:30 p.m. The letter says members of the public are encouraged to attend to ask questions and share thoughts.

According to the YMCA-YWCA’s latest annual report, the organization served 67,223 people across 37 program sites throughout the capital region in 2013.
