The historic Opinicon Resort, located about an hour-and-a-half southwest of Ottawa, will be sold at auction with the bidding opening at $500,000 in the coming weeks.

The resort, which has been run by the Chaffey family since 1921, sits on 16 acres on the Rideau Canal at Chaffey’s Lock, near Seeley’s Bay just north of Gananoque. It offers accommodations for 120 people.

The resort was initially built as as family residence in early 19th century Upper Canada.

It became a boarding house in the 1890’s and a men’s fishing club in the early 1900’s. Since then, the Opinicon has evolved into one of Eastern Ontario’s oldest and most respected resorts. It is now owned by Karen Cross and her sister, Cindy Simpson. The pair have decided to sell the property after the passing of their mother, Janice Jarrett Cross, in February 2012.

The property features a main hotel with 18 rooms, a dining room capable of serving the entire resort, a full commercial kitchen, meeting rooms and 15 separate cottages. It also has three houses, a general store with a snack bar, a private boat ramp and access for up to 20 boats at the resorts dock as well as 800 feet of waterfront on Opinicon Lake.

The resort is being sold by Gordon’s Estate Services Ltd. An open house will be held on December 10th and 17th. Bidding on the property will start at $500,000, all tenders are due by Dec. 18.
