Removal of “hundreds” of dying or dead ash trees in Ottawa will begin Monday in the city’s west end.
The National Capital Commission said in a news release Friday that maintenance crews will begin to remove infested trees on Fisher Avenue near Shillington Avenue, along the Ottawa River pathway and along the Sir John A. Macdonald Parkway.
The tree removal may require some lane closures during off-peak hours, said the NCC, which joins the City of Ottawa and many private property owners in removing trees infested with the emerald ash borer. The destructive insect first discovered in Canada in the summer of 2002 has killed millions of trees in Canada and the U.S.
While not supplying a specific number, the NCC said “hundreds of dying or dead ash trees that are infested with the emerald ash borer will have to be removed, as they now constitute a safety hazard for pedestrians and motorists.”
The commission said it will plant new trees to replace the ash trees.
