An online petition wants Palladium Drive renamed after former Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson, and by Monday morning it had attracted 1,684 signatures.
Alfredsson Way, anyone?
The petition is on a website called Change.org, where people can go to start petitions on anything.
Here’s its argument:
“In following the theme of naming the streets around the Canadian Tire Centre after Ottawa Senators Legends such as Cyclone Taylor Boulevard, Frank Nighbor Place, Frank Finnigan Way and Silver Sevens Road, it would be a great idea to honour the longest reigning captain of the modern day Ottawa Senators by updating the name of Palladium Drive to Alfredsson Way as well as changing the address of the arena to 1111.”
It notes that Alfredsson is the team’s leading scorer and has been instrumental in mental health awareness through the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and charities throughout the community.
The person who started the petition doesn’t give a real name, but says it will be delivered to Mayor Jim Watson. It went online Thursday, the day of Alfredsson’s retirement.
Change.org has had other Alfie petitions in the past, some of them shooting higher than a mere name change. A couple in the early summer of 2012 urged the captain to return and play here another season. (He did.)
Given the number of times the Palladium/Corel Centre/Scotiabank Place/Canadian Tire Centre has changed its name, maybe a new street name isn’t such a long shot.
