Put on your party toques — the 37th edition of Winterlude will celebrate a pair of very Canadian birthdays.

The 50th anniversary of the Canadian flag and the 200th anniversary of the birth of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first prime minister, will both be honoured during the capital’s annual winter festival, taking place from Jan. 30 to Feb. 16 at sites in Ottawa and Gatineau.

On Feb. 15, the maple leaf flag will be raised in a ceremony at Confederation Park. And throughout Winterlude, interactive exhibits at Jacques Cartier Park will explore the life of Macdonald and his drive to form a nation.

Winterlude will also mark Gov. Gen. David Johnston’s declaration of 2015 as the Year of Sport in Canada. Festivalgoers will be invited to play soccer in the snow with Shuéme, the official mascot of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015, and check out a huge ice-sculpture salute to the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games.

The festival program was announced Monday by Heritage Minister Shelly Glover. See the full schedule at www.winterlude.gc.ca.
