Muslim religious leaders from across Ottawa and Gatineau have released a statement steadfastly objecting a recent message from a Kemptville-born member of ISIL calling for attacks against Canadians.
The imams, representing most of the major mosques in the region, released the statement early Wednesday and comes Tuesday after some Ottawa muslim religious leaders called on their communities to report individuals who are suspected of being radicalized and may be involved with terrorist acts.
“We categorically and unequivocally condemn all kinds of attacks against innocent people in Canada or any other place in the world. The teachings of our faith leave no room for such actions,” said the statement from the imams.
“As such, we call upon our fellow brothers and sisters in faith to outright reject the call to violence by ISIS (another version of the name used by the extremist group). We vehemently stress that Muslims have absolutely no duty to migrate to ISIS-controlled areas or to assist in any way, shape or form in promoting their cause. We believe that Muslims can legitimately continue to live in Canada while obeying all laws of this great nation and sincerely practicing and exemplifying the teachings of our faith within the Canadian context.”
Over the weekend, Kemptville-born John Maguire, 24, identified himself as Abu Anwar al-Canadi in an ISIL (sometimes called ISIS) video posted on YouTube. In the six-minute propaganda video, Muslim convert Maguire apparently reads a scripted message and refers repeatedly to the October killings of two Canadian forces members.
He tells fellow Muslims that waging jihad in their home countries is a religious obligation.
