Uber has super-sized its aggressive campaign in Ottawa, promising to supply larger vehicles for groups in time for Christmas and New Year’s party season.
The addition is called uberXL.
Here’s what the company had to say on Friday: “We’re really excited to announce the arrival of uberXL, the most affordable high capacity vehicle option in town! With room for up to six riders, uberXL is spacious, convenient and low-cost — think Toyota Highlanders, Honda Odysseys and Ford Explorers.”
Otherwise, it’s the same service as regular uberX, just using bigger vehicles.
Meanwhile three U.S. cities have started planning a way to compete with Uber. Chicago, New York, and Washington have begun developing their own apps that would call and pay for regular city taxis in the same way that Uber’s app works.
They’re not yet on the commercial market, but Washington’s DC TaxiApp will let passengers pre-load their credit cards to pay their fares.
