2015MY X5M and X6M
The new BMW X5 M and new BMW X6 M see the M division setting the pace once again in the
high-performance Sports Activity Vehicle segment. When the previous generation of the two
vehicles arrived in 2009, it was the first time the high-performance character distilled by BMW M
had been transplanted into an all-wheel-drive BMW X model. The result was class-leading
dynamics. The new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M pull no punches in writing the next chapter in this
success story with another significant step forward in dynamic excellence, distinct M design and
outstanding efficiency. Both models will arrive in Canadian showrooms in the Spring of 2015, with a
retail launch date of March 28, with ordering opening in January. With a number of enhancements
to the drivetrain, chassis and equipment, including standard 21” M Light Alloy Wheels, Active LED
headlights and Head-up display, the X5 M will be priced at $105,900.
Model 2015MY MSRP
X5 M $105,900
X6 M $108,200
Exterior Design
As with every M model, design follows function. The aesthetic specificities of the all new X5 M and
X6 M leave little doubt as to their dynamic potential. Both models feature typical M aerodynamic and design cues such as:
Exteriors fully painted in body color are another element differentiating both models from their
regular X5 and X6 siblings. The X6 M goes even further and integrates a rear spoiler for the first
time.
Both X5 M and X6 M are completed with standard 21" bicolor M light Alloy wheels wrapped in
mixed non-runflat Michelin Pilot Super Sport UHP tires. The wheels are on a staggered setup, 10
inches wide in the front, equipped with 285/35 R21tires, and 11.5 inches wide in the rear with
325/30 R21 tires.
Two new colors will also be introduced with the new X5 M and X6 M: Donington Grey metallic and
Long Beach Blue metallic.
Interior
Inside, both models impress with their sporty cabin and high-quality finish. The multi-function front
seats feature an integrated headrest with embossed M logo and provide plenty of lateral support.
They are electrically adjustable in all directions and also include power side-bolsters, thigh rest and
lumbar support. Their sporty nature is complemented by other typical M interior elements such as:
Interior – Upholsteries and Trim
Both X5 M and X6 M come equipped with standard extended Leather upholstery available in three
colors, as well as a leather-wrapped dashboard. Optional full-Leather upholstery is available in five
colors, including the exclusive Aragon Brown and Mugello Red.
Two M specific interior trims are also available for the dashboard, including Carbon Fibre (also
available on M6) and Trace Aluminum (also available on M5)
Engine and Drivetrain
At the heart of the all-new X5 M and X6 M is a 4.4-liter M TwinPower Turbo V8 featuring two
TwinScroll turbochargers, cross-bank exhaust manifolds, VALVETRONIC and High Precision Direct
Injection. The new engine puts out 567 hp at its peak (between 6,000 and 6,500 rpm), which
represents a 3% increase compared to its predecessor. Even more impressive is the torque jump:
+53 lb-ft or close to an 11% increase, for a total peak torque output of 553 lb-ft available between
2,200 and 5,000 rpm! Given the high performance nature of both vehicles, the oil injection system
is also revised to allow appropriate lubrication under high lateral and longitudinal acceleration, up to
1.2 g. Cooling of all the powertrain components comes courtesy of a newly developed combination
of low-temperature and high-temperature radiators which also handle the cooling of the
turbochargers, charge air and transmission oil.
To transfer all this power to the wheels, the all-new X5 M and X6 M use a newly developed eightspeed
M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Its instantaneous response and fast gear changes
make it the perfect performance complement to the twin turbo V8. So equipped, both X5 M and X6
M accelerate from 0-100Km/h in just 4.2 seconds.
Additionally, the transmission's wider ratio spread allows for a substantial jump in efficiency
compared to the outgoing six-speed transmission, with fuel economy (in the European cycle, EPA
values to be communicated closer to launch). The new eight-speed M Steptronic transmission can
additionally be operated manually via use of the steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles.
Additionally, a Launch Control function optimizes acceleration off the line.
The all-new X5 M and X6 M use xDrive, BMW's intelligent all-wheel drive, and Dynamic
Performance Control to transfer the power to the road in the most effective way. For greater agility,
xDrive is rear-biased by default. It is however able to distribute power between the front and rear
axles – from 100 percent at the rear to up to 100 percent at the front – thanks to an electronically
controlled multi-plate clutch. This way, the X5 M and X6 M ensure the best possible traction
whatever the road conditions.
Completing xDrive and assisting it in its work is Dynamic Performance Control, which controls the
distribution of torque between the rear wheels and allows for much greater agility and traction. The
system allows the X5 M and X6 M to follow the course set by the driver more accurately, reduces
the effort required at the wheel and the number of corrections necessary. It also works toward
eliminating the natural propensity of conventional all-wheel-drive vehicles to understeer. It improves
traction even on changing road surfaces with various friction levels. The head unit can display how
Dynamic Performance Control is operating in real-time, with arrows showing where the engine
power is being sent at any time to each wheel.
Chassis
The all-new X5 M and X6 M receive substantial chassis upgrades to match the performance
potential of their drivetrain. The double-wishbone front suspension receives revised kinematics in
the form of an increase in camber, optimized camber progression and steering pivot axis. This gives
both vehicles an increase in cornering force potential and agility. Additionally, directional accuraccy
and stability is improved by M-specific elastokinematics with more rigid bearings both at the front
and rear suspensions. Firmer suspension tuning, a 10-millimeter drop in ride height and Active Roll
Stabilization effectively reduce body roll, pitch and yaw. Finally, both X5 M and X6 M come
equipped with standard self levelling rear air suspension, as well as Dynamic Damper Control with
electronically adjustable dampers and three modes (COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+) that the
driver can select from to optimize comfort or performance.
Similar to the recent BMW M3 and M4 launched earlier this year, the new X5 M and X6 M feature a
new Electric power steering system. Developed in house, this system offers trademark M direct
feel, precision and progressivity at the limits. It features a servotronic function that modulates the
degree of assistance based on the vehicle's speed and can be configured in three distinct modes
(COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+).
Finally, the X5 M and X6 M feature M compound brakes with large six-piston fixed calipers at the
front and single-piston floating calipers at the rear. These brakes are a perfect combination of
stopping power, pedal feel, low weight and heat resistance. They include cast iron, ventilated and
cross-drilled rotors mounted to aluminum hats. The brake pad surface has been increased by 50%
compared to the predecessor models while the system's weight is down by 3.5 lbs, which helps
reduce unsprung and rotating masses. In true M fashion, the brake calipers are painted in Dark Blue
metallic and feature the M logo
