Relatives of a man accused in a bizarre attack on a 101-year-old war veteran say they are relieved and pleased that Ernest Côté has recovered and is in good spirits.

“We’re very grateful that we heard through the media that Mr. Côté was not seriously injured and appears to be doing very well,” Norm Bush said Monday morning outside the Ottawa courthouse where his brother, Ian Bush, 59, was making a second appearance on charges of attempted murder and robbery.

“We wish he and his family all the best, especially at this time of year,” added Norm Bush, who travelled to Ottawa from his home in Dryden in Northern Ontario after learning his management-consultant brother had been arrested in the Dec. 17 home invasion.

The robbery at Côté‘s New Edinburgh apartment by a man posing as a City of Ottawa employee has received national attention and prompted Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Saturday to commend citizens for providing information and police for making a quick arrest.

Ian Bush’s lawyer, Geraldine Castle-Trudel, said she was told his arrest followed a tip from a family member.

A sombre Norm Bush said relatives are struggling to understand how a man with no criminal record, and a history of community and family involvement, could be facing such serious charges.

“Our whole family is still in shock and disbelief,” he told the Citizen. “We haven’t had the opportunity to talk to Ian, so we really don’t have much more to say at this point.”

Ian Bush and his wife live in Orléans. They have three adult children and a recent grandson.
