A church that was at one time the heart of Centretown’s francophone community has been sold for development.
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Ottawa on Monday announced the sale of the former Saint-Charles church, located in Vanier, for about $4 million.
The Archdiocese says the new owner, who has not been revealed, intends to redevelop the site into a mixed-use residential and commercial project, which will include a re-purposing of the former church building.
The historic church — located on St. Charles Street between Beechwood Avenue and Barrette Street — has been vacant since 2010 and was put up for sale because it was too expensive to maintain.
Half of the proceeds of the sale will be used for the establishment of an endowment fund in support of pastoral work serving the Catholic francophone community; 40 per cent will go to area parishes and the remaining 10 per cent will go to a pension fund for priests of the Archdiocese, it said in a statement.
Jean-François Parent, a researcher at the Vanier Museopark, a community museum on the history of Vanier, says the exterior facade of the church — with its “oeil-de-boeuf” or circular window and distinctive bell tower — dates back to 1908 and received heritage designation last year. However he’s concerned about what will happen to the contents of the century-old church.
“The interior of the church has a lot of architectural features that are classic early 20th century French Canadian church columns, mouldings, paintings, and we’re a little bit worried that those features will disappear over the time,” he says.
Parent says the church was once a beacon for the community in the early 1900s because of its strong mandate in preserving French Canadian interests within the community.
“It was the focal point for French Canadian culture,” says Parent. “And a lot of organizations have emerged from this church — one example The Order of Jacques Cartier, which was a secret society founded in 1926.”
