An diplomat’s cook who “stole the innocence” of young girls was sentenced on Monday to two years, eight months prison.

Mustapha Barhoumi, 52, admitted to charges of sexual interference, telling police that it was “the way God made me.”

Justice Ann Alder told Barhoumi, a diagnosed pedophile: “You should be ashamed and horrified at your actions. You stole the innocence of (those) young girls. It is something they will never get back. There is no excuse.”

Alder did, however, give Barhoumi credit for quickly admitting his guilt and saving the children and their parents from the “added trauma” of a trial.

Barhoumi has been in custody since his arrest in May. With credit for time served, his remaining sentence is 21 months.

Alder recommended that Barhoumi, a father of five, serve his remaining prison time in a secure treatment centre.

A publication ban forbids publishing details that might identify the victims.

In a victim impact statement, the girls’ father told the court that Barhoumi had “destroyed” his daughters’ futures and left them traumatized and in treatment.

“My spirit is grieving,” he said. “It would be a lie to say everything is OK.”

The preteen girls also produced victim impact statements — mostly in the form of drawings — to illustrate their state of mind.
