A 66-year-old man is expected to appear in court Christmas Day after being charged with stealing from the elderly and impersonating a police officer.

Adrian McQuade, of no fixed address, is alleged to have approached elderly people in the street and identified himself as a police officer. He would then take money from them and flee. He did not wear a police uniform.

Ottawa police said there were at least six different incidents of these thefts between Dec. 10 and 23 on Rideau Street between Cumberland and Charlotte streets.

McQuade is charged with:

  • seven counts of false representation of an officer
  • two counts of robbery
  • two counts of theft not exceeding $5,000
  • assault
  • possession of stolen property
