The Rideau Canal Skateway will open Saturday morning, just in time to celebrate the 200th birthday of Canada’s first Prime Minister.
The National Capital Commission, whose workers were out all night checking conditions and grooming the ice, is opening a 3.6-kilometre section from Somerset Street to the Bank Street Bridge, not including Patterson Creek. That’s almost half of the Skateway’s 7.8-kilometre length.
The 45th season of the outdoor skating rink will begin with a small ceremony featuring a bagpiper, in honour of Sir John A. Macdonald’s Scottish heritage, at 10:30 a.m. at Fifth Avenue.
Ice conditions on the canal are said to be fair, which the NCC says is common at the start of the season. Change rooms and concessions will be available along the open portion of the Skateway as of Saturday.
The NCC is hoping, with continuing cool temperatures, to open the rest of the Skateway in the coming days.
Environment Canada has forecast a mix of sun and cloud for Saturday, a high of -10 C and a thirty per cent chance of snow. The low is to hit -15 C overnight and Sunday see a high of – 6 C.
The opening of the Skateway’s 45th season is a little earlier than usual, with recent seasons beginning on or after January 14 and lasting for about 51 days. Last year, the Skateway opened on December 31 and ran for a remarkable 71 days, though this did not breaking the record 90 days in the winter of 1971-72.
The NCC also now has an Android and iPhone app providing ice conditions, a map of the Skateway and more — including tracking your skating speed. Download it at www.ncc-ccn.gc.ca.
