Cartoonists worldwide have been deeply affected by the killing of 12 people at the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris on Jan. 7.

A picture can tell a story, and Patrick LaMontagne, whose work appears regularly in the Citizen, gives us the story behind the story by way of a video of his cartooning process.

He wrote and produced this video essay featuring today’s cartoon from start to finish as a commentary on editorial cartooning and the Charlie Hebdo massacre.

LaMontagne is a nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist, illustrator and digital painter who lives in Canmore, Alta.

Two of his digital paintings received Guru Awards at the 2010 Photoshop World Conference in Las Vegas, including the Best in Show. Another earned the Best in Show in 2014.
