Glebe shoppers looking to get their weekend magazine fix were greeted by locked doors and a simple message Saturday morning: “Unfortunately, Brittons has had to close its doors.”
Several customers tried the door at the longstanding newsstand at 846 Bank St. at the corner of Fifth Avenue and were visibly stunned to find it locked.
Brittons not only sold magazines and newspapers, but often hosted local and national authors for readings.
Just got back from @BrittonsOttawa – doors closed – business closed. Anyone know when this happened?

Here is the text from the note on Brittons’ door.
“Unfortunately, Brittons has had to close its doors. Due to changing times our business is no longer economically viable.
We wish to thank all our loyal customers for their continued support over the many years.
My wife Trish & I look forward to our years of retirement & wish all of you in The Glebe & elsewhere health & happiness.”
A handwritten note at the bottom directed people seeking more information to contact Gorfay Realty.
A posted sign and locked door told customers Brittons has closed for good.
